VÍS Launches First of its Kind Car Insurance Policy Priced Solely on Driver Behavior

VÍS, Iceland’s leading insurer, set out to encourage safer driving—especially among young drivers—by creating a usage-based car insurance policy priced solely on driving behavior rather than age or other traditional risk factors. Faced with pandemic constraints and a need to launch quickly, the company challenged itself to remove age-based premiums and deliver a fair, behavior-driven product that could be tested and iterated rapidly.

Working with Deloitte and built on the OutSystems platform, VÍS launched Ökuvísir (“Drive Indicator”) after a four‑month development sprint that integrated telematics (via a Cordova plugin to Cambridge Mobile Telematics), gamification, and GDPR-conscious testing. The app rates trips on speed, acceleration, braking, turns and phone use, offers a 14‑day trial that stops data collection unless users sign up, and feeds monthly, behavior-based premiums—resulting in a March 2021 launch that topped Icelandic app store downloads and delivered a novel, scalable product that continues to evolve.
