Planet, a payments and technology provider focused on international spending, won the exclusive contract to deliver the UAE’s digital Tax Free shopping system. Facing a $82 billion market and just four months from tender to launch, Planet needed a platform that could rapidly deliver a secure, scalable, and user-friendly solution connecting merchants, tax authorities and banks while preserving a world-class shopper experience.

Built on OutSystems, Planet delivered the world’s first integrated end‑to‑end VAT refund system in four months—combining merchant POS validation, self‑service kiosks, government back‑end integrations, mobile device management, CRM and call management. The rollout enabled real‑time shopper validation (~2.5 seconds), up to 80% faster validation, a 93% reduction in claim time (to about two minutes), a 30% increase in claim completion, roughly 60% FTE efficiency savings (a 16‑person core team vs ~50–60 otherwise), and 13,000 merchants onboarded in year one; the platform is now being used in other countries.
