Case Study: Jerónimo Martins achieves rapid store-of-the-future experimentation with OutSystems

A OutSystems Case Study

Preview of the Jerónimo Martins Case Study

Inside Supermarket Giant, Jerónimo Martins’ Store of the Future Experiment

Jerónimo Martins, a €18 billion grocery group with 4,100 stores and 115,000+ employees, needed a safe, fast way to explore how new technologies could reshape supermarket shopping. To test customer-facing innovations with Gen Z users and avoid disrupting core operations, JM and OutSystems partner Truewind built the Pingo Doce & Go Nova laboratory at Nova School of Business & Economics. The lab addressed heavy integration needs (eight legacy systems and dozens of devices) and the requirement for fast, continuous experimentation and delivery.

The team delivered a multi‑technology store experience—four connected apps (consumer, staff, production, back office), computer vision, NFC tap‑and‑go, QR entry/exit, mobile payments and 24/7 self‑service cabinets—integrating legacy systems and 34 third‑party devices. An agile, small-squad approach and OutSystems’ rapid development, DevOps and integration capabilities produced an initial solution in ~20 weeks (42 to live), enabled two‑week sprints, hundreds of daily visits, quick iterations, and a reusable model for testing and refining future retail experiences.
