How EMC Built and Scaled TheHub to Serve 12,000 Engineers

EMC, a global enterprise software vendor with more than 12,000 engineers in 86 countries and 376 labs, needed a unified portal—TheHub—to “hubify” disparate tools and support an open contribution model across business units after many acquisitions. VP Ed Jones required a solution that would let engineers and non‑developers contribute widgets and access toolchains without forcing teams to switch or manage multiple inconsistent systems.

EMC partnered with OutSystems, forming a joint Scrum team that prototyped and launched TheHub in three months on a low‑code platform. TheHub is a four‑layer Product Delivery Platform with a modern portal and modular widgets (e.g., my defects, my incidents via ServiceNow, my tasks via CA Rally) that developers and non‑developers can create or assemble. The result is a scalable, unified experience used by thousands weekly (2,000–3,000 engineers/week), faster delivery, quick security adoption, and engineers focusing on product work rather than tool management.
