A OSIsoft Case Study
Barrick Gold’s Goldstrike mine, one of the Western Hemisphere’s largest gold districts, faced a growing environmental and operational challenge as deeper ore contained more total carbonaceous material (TCM). A $610M TCM Leach Project replaced cyanide with a thiosulfate-resin process that doubled equipment and complexity with little increase in staff, creating a gap between operations and environmental reporting: deviations were identified weeks later and official record-keeping lagged, risking permit compliance.
Goldstrike implemented the PI System (PI Server, Asset Framework and Notifications) to model circuits and permit limits in AF, generate real-time Boolean deviation checks, and push proactive alerts to supervisors and environmental staff. The change closed the workflow gap, cut permit deviations by 45% and fan trips by 61% over comparable eight-month periods, improved situational awareness, secured regulatory compliance and freed engineering time for higher-value work.
