Proactive Chemical Batch Process Monitoring With Golden Batch Technology

Arkema Inc.’s Sartomer subsidiary operates a West Chester plant that produces hundreds of acrylic and methacrylic monomers across 11 multipurpose reactors and more than 200 recipes. Swing production and vessel-to-vessel variability made it hard to spot small deviations from ideal runs, risking yield loss and quality problems that could worsen downstream.

The plant implemented a 24/7 automated PI BatchView display in PI ProcessBook with Visual Basic code that auto-updates by batch ID to show the current batch alongside a golden batch and the three most recent runs (color-coded for quick recognition). This real-time, side-by-side comparison lets operators and engineers detect off-track batches and temperature spikes immediately, enabling corrective action that salvaged thousands of dollars in raw materials, improved yield, and smoothed plant operations.
