Itochu’s Innovative Cloud-Based Services Connect Japan’s New Energy Ecosystem

Itochu Techno-Solutions Corporation is a Japanese systems integrator and service provider in the power and utilities sector that faced a rapidly changing post‑2011 energy market: deregulation, a surge of renewable generators, and greater need for demand‑response and grid stability forced a shift from application‑driven to integrated, data‑driven services. To succeed across smart homes, renewables, T&D and retail markets, Itochu needed a platform to collect diverse, high‑fidelity data and enable new customer connections across the supply‑demand chain.

Itochu built E‑PLSM, a cloud‑based Energy Platform for Simulation and Management that leverages OSIsoft’s PI System (data archive, Asset Framework, Event Frames, notifications) and Connected Services to integrate multiple applications—smart home monitoring, PV/wind asset optimization, transmission forecasting and PPS demand‑supply balancing. The solution enabled more accurate forecasting, lower maintenance costs for renewables, scalable data integration for application development, and a transformed business model that connects customers on both ends of Japan’s energy market to deliver new, value‑added services.
