AES Tietê, the São Paulo division of global energy company AES, operates 12 hydroelectric facilities and manages waterways where rapid, data-driven decisions are critical for dam safety, flood prevention and community protection. Historically, operators relied on scattered manuals and manual calculations—an approach that slowed response times and risked repeating past catastrophic failures like the 1977 Euclides da Cunha dam breach.

To address this, AES Tietê implemented the PI System to centralize telemetry, operational tables and logical calculations into a single view and to simulate reservoir inflows. The solution enabled predictive trend analysis and faster, decentralized control; during heavy rains in January 2016 it allowed staff to act in time to avoid a critical water level. The project improved operational productivity, safety and regulatory reporting while making remote plant control more accurate and reliable.
