eBay Inc. Data Centers and the PI System

eBay Inc., a global e-commerce leader with more than 400 million listings and rapidly growing transaction volumes, faced the challenge of scaling its data center footprint while controlling costs, energy use (data centers account for over 50% of its global power consumption), and environmental impact. The company needed forward-thinking, flexible designs and tools to consolidate operations, manage increasing workloads, and tie IT costs to business objectives.

eBay implemented OSIsoft’s PI System to collect and synchronize more than 500,000 data streams from sensors across IT and facilities, presenting a single-pane view for real-time monitoring, PUE reporting and Total Cost of Ownership analysis. The solution delivered scalable visibility and baselining for continuous improvement, enabling a 32% infrastructure growth while keeping energy-per-transaction in check, meeting aggressive PUE targets (Salt Lake designed ≤1.15; Phoenix achieving partial PUEs below 1.05 even at 119°F), lowering costs, reducing latency and funding further investments.
