Dell Accelerates the Deployment of Hyperscale MDCs with Embedded PI Systems

eBay needed to scale its Utah and Arizona data centers quickly to keep pace with exponential data growth while ensuring continuous availability. Working with Dell Data Center Solutions (rack-and-roll modular data centers) and OSIsoft, eBay faced long, inconsistent integration processes—different system integrators and manual steps meant new MDCs couldn’t capture operational data until about two weeks after deployment.

Dell and eBay implemented the S3 Solution—standardized AF naming, automated tag and substitution-variable deployment, and preconfigured, factory-tested embedded PI Servers with a documented handoff process—supported by OSIsoft best practices. The result: integration time fell from two weeks to about four hours, commissioning data is captured on day one, human error and testing needs dropped, energy and operational monitoring improved, and eBay can rapidly scale and compare performance across sites.
