CENACE: Achieving Real-Time Situational Awareness

CENACE, Ecuador’s wholesale electricity market operator, faced the challenge of managing large volumes of real‑time data from multiple systems (SCADA, WAMS/29 PMUs, SPS, SIGDE and third‑party feeds). Operators struggled with distracting, cluttered displays and time‑consuming navigation, which hindered perception, understanding and projection—critical capabilities for timely decision‑making in emergencies.

CENACE consolidated data into the PI System (PI Server with Data Archive and AF) and built streamlined PI ProcessBook indicator panels based on situational‑awareness and a "Data/Pixel" design approach. The new single, structured displays reduced clutter, minimized navigation, and highlighted relevant elements—resulting in faster access to contextualized information, more assertive real‑time decisions, and improved process productivity and integration across systems.
