Building Reliability and Reputation with the PI System

Columbia Pipeline Group (CPG) is a major natural gas transporter serving the Northeastern U.S. via over 15,000 miles of pipeline and more than 100 compression stations. Reliability is central to its business; after repeated failures and a 2010 force majeure revealed that the PI System was being used only for after-the-fact investigations, CPG needed to shift from reactive to proactive asset management to protect deliveries and customer relationships.

CPG signed an Enterprise Agreement with OSIsoft, expanded its PI System (PI AF, Notifications, PI Coresight) and rolled out mobile tools to give operators real-time visibility and automated alerts. The change prevented more than 30 events, avoided about $2.8 million in costs (with $600–800k saved during implementation), reduced travel and unplanned visits, and helped the company maintain reliable service during extreme weather—strengthening customer trust and its market reputation.
