Case Study: Syngenta achieves ethanol-plant efficiency and major water & energy savings with OSIsoft PI System

A OSIsoft Case Study

Preview of the Syngenta Case Study

Building Customer Relationships Based on Data and Trust

Syngenta, a global agri-biotech company, developed Enogen® corn that expresses alpha‑amylase to improve ethanol dry‑grind processing. Their challenge was proving to ethanol plants that investing in Enogen would measurably increase efficiency, yield and throughput while reducing water, energy and chemical costs so growers, plants and local communities would adopt the technology.

Syngenta partnered with OSIsoft Connected Services to deploy the PI System, using Asset Framework, PI DataLink/ProcessBook/Coresight and Event Frames to collect, validate and analyze plant KPIs and financial models. The data-driven proof showed large savings (for a 100M‑gallon plant: ~68M gallons water, ~10M kWh electricity, ~350B BTUs natural gas and >100M lbs CO2 avoided), improved plant performance and stronger, trust‑based customer relationships that scale as more plants adopt Enogen.
