ArcelorMittal Long Products Democratizes Data to Empower People and Improve Quality

ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada, part of the world’s largest steelmaker, faced a retiring workforce and aging Fortran/VAX production systems that made it difficult to maintain and extract value from operational data. Their challenge was to modernize control systems, democratize data access for operators and engineers, and improve quality and traceability—starting with the slab casting process.

AMLP migrated to an open, multi-layer architecture centered on the PI System (PI Server, Asset Framework, Event Frames, PI DataLink, PI ProcessBook) to consolidate, cleanse and contextualize data, automate calculations via AF and AFSDK, and visualize real‑time status and quality events. The upgrade enabled centimeter-level slab tracking, linked quality events to time and position, captured process knowledge, avoided downtime during rollout, increased operator engagement and quality assurance, and set the PI System as the centerpiece for future automation expansion.
