A Orion Systems Integrators Case Study
Orion Systems Integrators worked with an American Multi-National Telecommunications Conglomerate serving more than 130 million customers. The customer’s Relay Services group was struggling to maintain its aging DOS-based workstation fleet for speech and hearing impaired services, especially after Unix-to-Linux server upgrades made the platform increasingly difficult to support. They needed a modernized solution that could preserve existing functionality while enabling future features, remote management, and 24x7 availability.
Orion Systems Integrators rebuilt the platform around a Linux-based, Java solution using JSON messaging, a custom Java messaging broker, WebSphere MQ, Eclipse, and Maven. The broker “impersonated” the legacy DOS workstations, translating binary server communication into a modern framework without downtime or new server-side hardware. As a result, the customer gained network flexibility beyond LAN-only residency, improved message visibility and troubleshooting, faster communication through MQ compression, and a smooth transition to new workstations with seamless interoperability between old and new systems.
