Case Study: Keystone Health Information Exchange achieves scalable, secure, data-driven care for 6.8M patients with Orion Health

A Orion Health Case Study

Preview of the Keystone Health Information Exchange Case Study

The Orion Health partnership is clearly working, with KeyHIE realising benefits that have placed the organization in the vanguard of value-based care

Keystone Health Information Exchange (KeyHIE), a Geisinger corporation founded in 2005, is Pennsylvania’s longest-operating HIE serving over 6.8 million patients across PA, NJ, DE and MD and connecting hospitals, physician practices, long‑term care, home health, pharmacies, urgent care, payers and EMS. Faced with highly variable data quality and formats, the need to link remote and resource‑limited sites, and the imperative to drive clinician adoption for value‑based care and population health (including programs like PacMAT), KeyHIE partnered with Orion Health to provide an interoperable, scalable platform—deploying solutions such as Rhapsody, Orion’s Clinical Data Repository, Clinical Portal, Communicate secure messaging, patient portal tools and HIE modules.

Orion Health consolidated and standardized KeyHIE’s massive, real‑time feeds into a single platform (recently migrated to AWS), enabling robust integration via open APIs and secure point‑to‑point exchange. The partnership supported 363% participant growth, a repository of well over 14 million records, and operational impact last year that included 200 rules driving 115,000 notifications and the sharing of more than 21.5 million documents, labs and ER reports—improving provider efficiency, enabling life‑saving point‑of‑care decisions, and positioning KeyHIE at the forefront of value‑based care with Orion Health.
