Case Study: New Mexico Health Information Collaborative achieves statewide, real-time longitudinal patient records with Orion Health

A Orion Health Case Study

Preview of the New Mexico Health Information Collaborative Case Study

Statewide Health Information Exchange established unprecedented access for participants and longitudinal patients records for state residents

The New Mexico Health Information Collaborative (NMHIC) operates a statewide Health Information Exchange that aggregates records for over 1.8 million patients and captures roughly 85% of emergency department admissions and 88% of overall admissions. Faced with the need to become the trusted, comprehensive source of longitudinal patient records across diverse providers and EHRs, NMHIC needed to manage rapidly expanding and non‑traditional data, ensure secure communications, and integrate seamlessly into clinical workflows — challenges it addressed by selecting Orion Health and its eHealth platform as the HIE’s data management backbone.

Orion Health implemented a Clinical Data Repository (built on Rhapsody), the Communicate secure messaging service, and plans to add the Amadeus platform for high‑volume, normalized non‑traditional data. The solution delivers clean, real‑time clinical feeds (avoiding typical 60–90 day lags), powers analytics used to identify and stratify at‑risk members, and enables instant secure referrals (responses in seconds versus 48‑hour phone follow‑ups), supporting NMHIC’s statewide coverage and measurable improvements in timeliness, workflow integration, and population‑health analytics.
