Southern Cross Healthcare Migrates Critical Patient Records to AWS

Southern Cross Healthcare Limited, New Zealand’s largest independent private healthcare network, was undertaking a digital transformation to eliminate data silos and improve clinical workflows and patient access to records. Working with Orion Health, which had provided the Clinical Workstation and Orion Health Clinical Portal since 2015, the organisation needed to migrate its core electronic patient records from on‑premises servers to the cloud to boost availability, security, and scalability.

Orion Health recommended and helped migrate Clinical Workstation to AWS, completing the cutover in five months and implementing cloud‑native tooling, Elastic Load Balancing, Amazon RDS, automated deployments, and AWS security services. The move raised uptime from 99.5% to 99.99%, reduced CPU utilisation by about 40%, sped release cycles and scaling, improved monitoring and reporting visibility, and delivered stronger security and data‑residency compliance — enabling more consistent clinician access and faster innovation.
