Province of Alberta builds momentum for information sharing using Orion Health Clinical Portal

Alberta Health Services faced the challenge of breaking down information silos and expanding secure EHR access across multiple stakeholders to reduce treatment delays and improve care coordination. Through an open procurement it selected Orion Health and its Orion Health Clinical Portal to provide a scalable, modular way to aggregate and share patient data region‑wide without replacing existing systems.

Orion Health implemented the Clinical Portal as a web‑based layer over existing systems, delivering single‑view, read‑only patient summaries (demographics, encounters, labs, imaging, reports) and adding modules such as a client registry, pharmaceuticals, PACS viewing and eSignature. The portal moved from pilots to broad authorized use with rapid clinician uptake (physicians comfortable after about 10 minutes of training), earlier access to results, reduced duplication and treatment delays, and new analytics capability to measure impacts like contributions to wait times.
