Orion Health Deploys AWS Services to Help Keystone Health Information Exchange Expand

Keystone Health Information Exchange (KeyHIE), one of the oldest and largest HIEs in the U.S. with 200 participating organizations and 7.5 million patient records, experienced rapid growth (a 67% client increase over two years) that overwhelmed its legacy on‑premises platform, causing unreliable performance and downtime. Orion Health, which had been supporting KeyHIE, proposed migrating KeyHIE’s systems to the cloud using Orion Health components running on AWS services (Amazon EC2, EBS, RDS, S3, VPC and related security tools) to restore stability and scalability.

Orion Health and AWS implemented a KeyHIE‑specific, multi‑tier VPC deployment—Orion Health software on EC2 with data in EBS, RDS and S3 and security via IAM/SSO/OAuth and AWS WAF—and completed the migration in about two weeks. The solution delivered measurable benefits: reliable 24/7 access to patient records for 200 organizations and 7.5M patients, faster and more seamless data retrieval (including cross‑HIE queries), streamlined onboarding of new clients, proactive monitoring using CPU and latency metrics that shifted Orion Health from reactive to proactive support, and restored client confidence while enabling new services such as delivering clinical data to payers.
