Case Study: North Dakota Health Information Network achieves secure statewide data sharing and improved care coordination with Orion Health Amadeus

A Orion Health Case Study

Preview of the North Dakota Health Information Network Case Study

Leveraging Technology to Achieve the Triple Aim

North Dakota Health Information Network (NDHIN) operates a secure statewide health information exchange covering 1.2 million patient IDs and connecting nearly all hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and other providers. NDHIN needed to overcome data‑sharing barriers, ensure secure messaging, coordinate complex transitions of care across many EHRs, and manage growing, varied data types — challenges it addressed with Orion Health technologies, including Amadeus, Communicate, Coordinate and Discover.

Orion Health deployed its Amadeus platform (hosted on AWS) along with Communicate, Coordinate and Discover to normalize and curate high‑volume data, support Direct/XDR secure messaging, and power use cases such as an automated autism registry, lab ordering network and advance directives repository. The Orion Health solution delivered measurable gains: 750 active users send about 9,000 XDR messages and receive over 11,000 monthly, improved care transitions for large and small providers, increased autism case identification (supporting CDC funding), secure messaging cost savings versus pay‑per‑message options, and reduced clinician burden — boosting NDHIN’s scalability and population‑health impact.
