Canterbury District Health Board - Customer Case Study

Canterbury District Health Board, New Zealand’s second-largest DHB serving about 560,000 people, faced major disruption after the 2011 earthquakes that damaged facilities, displaced patients and destroyed paper and electronic records. To enable shared access to patient records across secondary and primary care (general practice, pharmacy and community nursing) and restore timely point-of-care information, Canterbury DHB partnered with Pegasus Health and vendor Orion Health to commission the HealthOne electronic shared care record and related Orion Health solutions.

Orion Health implemented HealthOne—integrated with Orion Health’s Health Connect South, Coordinate, Consult and Rhapsody components—to aggregate GP, pharmacy and hospital data into a single patient view. The rollout extended across the South Island: by July 2016 nearly 1,500 general practice staff and over 450 pharmacy staff had access, and by January 2017 HealthOne held more than 80 million data items with ~1.7 million new items added monthly and 75,000+ accesses per month, improving timely, safe and more informed clinical decision-making.
