Cal INDEX - Customer Case Study

Cal INDEX is a California-based, non-profit statewide health information exchange created by former competitors (Anthem and Blue Shield of California) to break down data siloes that were limiting quality, cost and revenue optimization. Faced with fragmented clinical and claims data and the high cost of building complete patient records, Cal INDEX sought a technology partner to create a secure, scalable public utility for aggregating multi-source health data and chose Orion Health to provide the platform.

Orion Health deployed its Open Platform (the precursor to Orion Health Amadeus) to ingest and manage clinical, claims, prescription and lab data, provide a clinical portal and secure data access, and enforce governance and privacy controls. The solution went live in December 2014 with over 9 million member records and now holds about 10.5 million member records, has onboarded providers such as Dignity Health, and enables payers and providers to achieve economies of scale, better risk calculations and improved care coordination (avoiding the $20–$30 per-member cost of rebuilding records independently). Orion Health’s scalable platform delivers the foundation for Cal INDEX’s ongoing growth and research-ready longitudinal data.
