SYSNET International, led by CTO Odysseas Pentakalos, is a Northern Virginia consulting firm that develops OpenEMPI, an open-source master data management system for patient demographics and other entity data. For the new "entity" edition they needed to manage large volumes of records whose fields are defined by users at deployment, requiring high performance, schema flexibility, and full ACID transaction support.

After prototyping against relational and NoSQL options, SYSNET selected OrientDB for its performance, flexible schema (classes with dynamic extension), Apache license, and available commercial support. They migrated to OrientDB’s Blueprints API with some OrientDB-specific extensions, have run it successfully for over a year, and achieved the needed consistency and speed—planning to add clustering to boost throughput further.
