Awal Technologies, a Islamabad-based software firm that builds web and mobile solutions (including Awal ERP, HRM and e-commerce products), needed a data platform that could store document-centric records and model rich relationships for social-networking features without costly joins or a steep query-language learning curve. Their challenge was to find a reliable, distributed, open-source solution that combined document storage with graph traversal capabilities.

They selected OrientDB for its combined graph-document model, SQL-like query language and Apache license, using both Graph and Document APIs to implement relationships and store individual records. The result was faster, more intuitive development and powerful relationship traversal without adopting a new query language, avoiding limitations they experienced with MongoDB, CouchDB and other alternatives.
