A Ordnance Survey Case Study
Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council (WMBC) faced the challenge of reducing deadly skidding accidents by pinpointing current and future hotspots, merging council GIS data with external sources, and creating a single user-friendly system to make the most efficient use of engineers’ time. Walsall worked with Ordnance Survey (OS), using Public Sector Mapping Agreement data and the OS MasterMap Integrated Transport Network layer to support this effort.
Using OS MasterMap data provided by Ordnance Survey, and a bespoke GIS Skid Priority System developed by Marsh Associates, the project merged highways skid records with police accident data and mapped results against OS Topography data. The solution cut engineer data-processing from two weeks to half a day, eliminated complex manual assessments, produced a priority list for interventions, enabled consistent information sharing, and saved the council about £3,700 a year. Ordnance Survey’s data underpinned these measurable improvements.
