Ty Gwyn Special School - Customer Case Study

Ty Gwyn Special School in Cardiff was one of the schools affected by Cardiff Council’s complex special educational needs transport requirements, where growing costs, route complexity, and the need to reduce carbon emissions and management time made school transport planning difficult. The Council needed a better way to manage SEN home-to-school routes more efficiently, using Ordnance Survey geographic data and route optimisation tools.

Ordnance Survey’s OS MasterMap Integrated Transport Network Layer, used with Capita One Route Optimisation, helped Cardiff Council and Ty Gwyn Special School review routes, group pupils appropriately, and adjust journeys based on location and need. The result was a savings of £1.3 million to £1.8 million, routes cut by 1,200 miles per day, average journeys reduced from 14 to 12 miles, 40 fewer vehicles needed, and contract planning time expected to fall from four months to two.
