A Ordnance Survey Case Study
Transport Direct, a central government door‑to‑door journey planner, needed to change national travel behaviour, reduce road congestion and make travel services available online. To achieve this it partnered with Ordnance Survey, using OS MasterMap Integrated Transport Network (ITN) and 1:50 000 / 1:250 000 Scale Colour Raster datasets to provide the mapping, routing and geographic context required for reliable journey planning.
Ordnance Survey supplied the ITN platform and raster backdrops that enable car routing (including turn/height restrictions, one‑way roads and access limits) and national coverage for public‑transport options, predicted traffic, car parks, fares and CO2 calculations. The solution delivered clear results: by 2010 Transport Direct was logging about 20 million user sessions per year, had compiled a 25,000‑car‑park database, and surveys show travel‑behaviour change of roughly 20% overall (and nearly 50% for repeat journeys), outperforming the original 10% target.
