A Ordnance Survey Case Study
Totton and Eling Town Council needed to replace paper-based filing and better capture contractor-maintained assets (hedges, green spaces, footpaths) so it could manage contracts and share information with other public services. The council signed up to the Public Sector Mapping Agreement to access Ordnance Survey geographic datasets, including OS MasterMap, to provide a common, up-to-date geographic framework.
Using Ordnance Survey’s OS MasterMap and OS OpenData layers the council expanded its GIS to record building extents, footpaths, bus shelters, green routes and tree preservation orders, enabling unambiguous mapping for planning reviews and clearer reports to Traffic Management Officers and Hampshire County Council. The result was improved data accuracy, faster data retrieval and maintenance, easier sharing with police and other public bodies, and tangible savings in photocopying and staff time preparing maps.
