The City of Edinburgh Council - Customer Case Study

City of Edinburgh Council faced the challenge of planning and consulting on a city‑wide £2 million rollout of 20mph speed limits — the first programme of its scale in Scotland — needing to select roads and clearly inform decision makers and the public. The council worked with Ordnance Survey (OS), using mapping products made available through the One Scotland Mapping Agreement (OSMA), including OS MasterMap Topography Layer, OS VectorMap Local and OS VectorMap District, to produce clear, authoritative maps for the consultation.

Edinburgh used OS mapping to build a web map and consultation visuals that let residents and stakeholders comment on proposed 20mph routes; high‑quality OS mapping maximised reach (public demand even required a new server during consultation). The positive consultation response led Councillors to approve the programme, and OS maps continue to support delivery and stakeholder updates during the two‑year rollout, improving engagement and helping ensure accurate, easily understood information throughout the project.
