A Ordnance Survey Case Study
St. Edmundsbury Borough Council and Forest Heath District Council faced a tight deadline to redesign household waste collection rounds after changes to county transfer stations, and their paper‑based maps could not be updated in time. They worked with Ordnance Survey (using OS MasterMap and other OS data) alongside Integrated Skills Limited’s RouteSmart and ESRI ArcGIS to provide the mapping and route‑planning capability needed.
Ordnance Survey’s mapping data was used to zone the councils’ areas for single‑day collections, redesign balanced rounds, produce crew paper maps and future‑proof routes to absorb new developments; this led to combined savings of £180,000 (including £45,000 fuel and £15,000 overtime reductions, plus £120,000 from removing a round), 24,000 fewer miles driven and a 115‑tonne annual CO2 reduction, along with improved staff morale. Ordnance Survey’s data and tools also enabled ongoing service reviews (eg street cleansing) and better costed, manageable future changes.
