A Ordnance Survey Case Study
Southampton City Council needed a clearer picture of how cyclists move around the city, where accident hotspots and hazards occur, and which routes required repairs to make cycling safer and justify additional funding. To support this work the council used Ordnance Survey digital data products (including OS MasterMap Integrated Transport Network, Code-Point and 1:25 000 Scale Colour Raster) alongside a city-wide cyclist survey to map usage and problems.
Ordnance Survey’s mapping helped the council collect and visualise survey responses (3,700 packs distributed, 38% returned) and produce a city-wide route‑usage map that revealed hundreds of incidents (about 85% not in official records) and many surface/hazard reports. Using Ordnance Survey data, Southampton City Council has begun upgrades to two key cycle corridors, strengthened bids for roughly £18 million from the DfT Local Sustainable Transport Fund, increased funding for school cycle training, and improved police collaboration and planning for network repairs.
