A Ordnance Survey Case Study
South Cambridgeshire District Council faced major budget cuts and needed to save £400,000 from waste collection services while still serving 153,000 residents across a large rural area. Working with Ordnance Survey mapping datasets and route optimisation software, the council sought to improve waste collection efficiency with minimal disruption to households and recycling performance.
Ordnance Survey helped power a solution using OS Open Data Raster Maps and OS MasterMap Integrated Transport Network data within Webaspx WM Design Route Optimisation Software. The result was £200,000 saved in 2014-15, with a further £400,000 forecast, plus 180 new optimised collection rounds, 30 fewer routes, three fewer refuse vehicles, and annual CO2 savings of 56 tonnes.
