A Ordnance Survey Case Study
South Ayrshire Council needed a more efficient way to manage road asset information that was scattered across multiple databases, spreadsheets and documents. Working with vendor Ordnance Survey, the council sought to capture and centralise data on signs, signals, disabled bays, line markings and parking restrictions into a single spatial database using OS MasterMap Topography, ITN and Imagery layers plus Ordnance Survey raster mapping.
Ordnance Survey helped transfer around 20,000 individual features into the new database, linking photos and schematics and enabling off-setting of features against curb lines for accurate line data. The centralised solution cut data capture times, reduced software costs and freed staff for other tasks—delivering about £25,000 in savings—while improving data sharing, desk-based working, inspection scheduling and cross-department access to road asset information.
