A Ordnance Survey Case Study
South Ayrshire Council faced a bottleneck: only one staff member could use the desktop GIS to analyse school routes, determine pupil bus eligibility and answer catchment queries, slowing responses to parents and internal teams. Working with Ordnance Survey and leveraging OS MasterMap products (notably the Integrated Transport Network™ layer plus Topography, Imagery and other OS datasets), the council sought a solution to broaden access and speed up route analysis.
Ordnance Survey helped replace the single-user desktop system with a bespoke web-based GIS that combined OS MasterMap ITN data with the council’s path network and roads assets to produce real-time, turn-by-turn routing, safe-crossing annotations and mobile-optimised public access. The new tool lets multiple staff and residents run instant catchment and route checks, reduced entitlement analysis to just a few days and delivered estimated savings of £12,000–£15,000 while improving response times and parental confidence in safe routes.
