A Ordnance Survey Case Study
Severn Trent Water Limited, the UK water company responsible for supply and sewage across 21,000 km², faced fractured, paper‑based records and standalone mapping systems for its underground assets. To create a single source of quality geographic data and improve accuracy, consistency and speed of access, Severn Trent partnered with Ordnance Survey to implement OS MasterMap (Topography, ITN and Address Layer 2) and associated OS products.
Ordnance Survey’s data was loaded into a Central Spatial Repository and delivered via web viewers (GISSTviewer/GISSTanalyser), enabling 1,600 users to view and print complex maps with street‑level maps appearing in 3–4 seconds; UADMS is updated to the CSR daily and OS change‑only updates applied regularly. The Ordnance Survey solution gave Severn Trent a single, up‑to‑date source for asset management, billing and customer contact, simplified change control, supported Ofwat performance targets and produced clear operational efficiencies and measurable ROI.
