Case Study: Scottish and Southern Energy reduces site visits and cuts flying costs with Ordnance Survey's OS MasterMap Imagery Layer

A Ordnance Survey Case Study

Scottish and Southern Energy - Customer Case Study

Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) maintains 48,500 km of high‑voltage overhead lines across the UK, supported on wooden poles, and regularly faces power interruptions caused by vegetation growth or fallen trees. To improve monitoring and reduce costly, bespoke flying programmes and site visits, SSE turned to the OS MasterMap® Imagery Layer from Ordnance Survey.

Using the OS MasterMap® Imagery Layer, SSE implemented desktop analysis with high‑resolution, orthorectified imagery to pre‑plan inspections, reduce the number of site visits, and cut flying time and associated costs. The vendor’s imagery delivered more accurate wayleave assessments, better regulatory reporting, improved vegetation management and prioritised asset maintenance, enabling SSE to identify pole and cable risks more efficiently and lower operational risk and expenditures.
