A Ordnance Survey Case Study
Perth & Kinross and Angus councils partnered to replace and standardise their intranet and internet GIS to encourage data sharing, simplify administration and deliver configurable web maps across services. Working with Ordnance Survey and its Location Centre hosted GIS (delivered by licensed partner Forth Valley GIS) the councils sought a common platform able to serve different business requirements while providing access to Ordnance Survey datasets under the One Scotland Mapping Agreement.
Ordnance Survey’s Location Centre provided a fully hosted, phased GIS service giving both councils up‑to‑date OS MasterMap and other OS data, rapid web mapping (for example published gritting routes), shared bespoke tools, metadata support and reduced need for costly desktop licences. The solution aligned development roadmaps between the councils and delivered measurable savings of about £50,000 per council over five years (with further estimated savings of £20,000 each once used across all business systems), plus wider productivity and service‑delivery benefits.
