Openreach - Customer Case Study

Openreach, the BT Group business that manages the local access network and carries out thousands of streetworks, faced costly Fixed Penalty Notices caused by errors in street‑works notifications and out‑of‑date location data. To address this, Openreach adopted Ordnance Survey’s OS OnDemand web mapping service, using the OS MasterMap Topography Layer to provide the level of currency, accuracy and detail needed for planning and notification.

Ordnance Survey’s OS OnDemand was integrated with Openreach’s EToN Streetworks Notification System so 3,000 job originators can pull the most current OS MasterMap data, capture precise coordinates and automatically transfer them into notifications and permits. Because the mapping is hosted and served by Ordnance Survey there’s no need for Openreach to maintain its own server, cutting costs, and the improved accuracy has massively reduced notice penalties — with fines expected to fall to a minimal level annually.
