A Ordnance Survey Case Study
North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) faced the challenge of staging the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire—replicating the success of the Tour de France while keeping 144 professional riders and nearly half a million local spectators safe and minimising disruption to communities and businesses. NYCC worked with Ordnance Survey (OS), using datasets such as OS MasterMap® Topography Layer and AddressBase® Premium to map routes, identify hazards, settlement locations, sprint and pinch points, and to assess route and traffic-management options.
Ordnance Survey’s mapping and address data were integrated into NYCC’s planning systems to locate crowd barriers, stewarding, parking and traffic infrastructure and to show that 55,000 properties would be affected, with event information published on a single public site. The result was safer, better-coordinated event operations, lower-than-anticipated congestion, direct notifications to affected residents, and huge reach—about 1.5 million roadside spectators and 6 million viewers worldwide—underscoring Ordnance Survey’s key role in delivery.
