Case Study: NIG achieves more accurate underwriting and pricing with Ordnance Survey mapping data

A Ordnance Survey Case Study

Preview of the NIG Case Study

NIG - Customer Case Study

NIG, part of the Direct Line Group, needed more sophisticated risk selection and pricing for its Commercial and Personal Lines portfolios. Working with Esri UK and using OS VectorMap Local and GIS-based spatial analysis, NIG sought to give underwriters instant, address-level geographic risk insight to better assess perils like flood, fire, subsidence, theft and windstorm.

Esri UK built a bespoke geospatial platform that overlays market-leading peril models with over 20 years of Direct Line Group claims data at 5 sqm resolution across the UK, enabling underwriters to validate exposures, refine pricing and adjust portfolio appetite. The Esri UK solution drove a step change in underwriting capability—improving the personal lines risk profile (notably via a new flood model), supporting increased volumes of lower-risk business, and strengthening capital and reinsurance position through much more rigorous, address-level risk assessment.
