A Ordnance Survey Case Study
NHS Kent and Medway, which commissions services for more than half a million people across West Kent and must prepare for major growth including tens of thousands of new homes in the Thames Gateway, needed a way to analyse current and future health needs and site new GP surgeries and clinics. They adopted SHAPE, the web-enabled strategic health planning application built around Ordnance Survey geographic information, to bring mapping and travel-time analysis into multi-disciplinary service planning.
Using Ordnance Survey’s GI within SHAPE, planners performed walk-time and catchment analyses to identify optimal locations — for example siting the White Horse Surgery and Walk‑in Centre to serve up to 6,000 patients — and to plan services for development zones including a 7,500-home scheme near Bluewater. Ordnance Survey’s data improved decision-making, public consultation and partnership working, delivering more accurate, efficient placement of facilities and clearer visualisations that accelerated long-term health and regeneration planning.
