Newcastle City Council - Customer Case Study

Newcastle City Council faced budget cuts and a restructure that forced it to re‑optimise services, including waste management for 117,000 customers. To tackle this, the council worked with Integrated Skills Limited, using its Route Planning and Optimisation Software together with Ordnance Survey’s OS MasterMap Integrated Transport Network (ITN) data and RouteSmart base mapping to redesign refuse collection routes.

Integrated Skills Limited remodelled routes and introduced Weekly Alternative Collections (WAC), cutting residual waste mileage from 122,096 to 84,006 miles (saving £75,036, a 31% reduction) and recycling mileage from 93,808 to 78,684 miles (saving £29,912, a 16% reduction), reducing vehicle numbers and delivering over £100,000 per year in fuel savings; the approach has been rolled out across the North East, covering 1.1 million households and training more than 40 users.
