Case Study: Natural England achieves a cost-effective, widely used MAGIC environmental mapping portal with Ordnance Survey

Natural England needed a public-facing portal to host and visualise more than 300 national environmental datasets and to provide easy-to-use geospatial tools for both marine and land territories. Working with OS mapping (supplied via the Public Sector Mapping Agreement) and implemented by Landmark Solutions, the challenge was to integrate diverse government data into an economical, performant platform for planners, agencies and the public.

Using OS mapping, Landmark Solutions built the MAGIC online portal with themed datasets that are updated monthly, cloud-hosted and optimised for fast, interactive mapping. The OS-powered MAGIC site now delivers strong measurable impact—handling up to 11 million map images viewed per month—supports uses such as Preliminary Environmental Appraisals and flood defence schemes, and remains cost-effective thanks to free OS base and detailed mapping via the PSMA.
