A Ordnance Survey Case Study
The London Borough of Hounslow needed a better way to plan for emergencies, so it worked with Ordnance Survey to create vulnerability maps. Using Ordnance Survey geographic information, along with council and third-party data, the borough identified social, health and other vulnerability categories and overlaid them against hazards such as flooding, pandemics and fire risks.
Ordnance Survey helped Hounslow produce a series of visual risk maps that improved understanding of community risk across the borough, including hazards beyond its boundaries. The maps strengthened community resilience, informed emergency planning, and proved highly relevant during the 2009 swine flu outbreak, when the highest-risk areas closely matched the highest concentrations of cases.
