A Ordnance Survey Case Study
Lee Valley Regional Park Authority needed to re-evaluate its park holdings after discovering that the maps used to calculate areas, path lengths and furniture counts were largely hand-drawn and out of date. To provide accurate GIS data for a renewed grounds-maintenance contract, the Authority worked with Ordnance Survey, using GPS data alongside high-resolution aerial photography and Ordnance Survey products such as the OS MasterMap Topography Layer and the OS MasterMap Integrated Transport Network Layer.
Ordnance Survey mapped and quality-assured every area, path and item of furniture over two years — covering 130,470 metres of pathway, 857,656 m² of grounds and 2,734 items of park furniture — and cross-referenced these to the contract Bills of Quantities. That work enabled projected savings of at least £50,000 on the grounds-maintenance contract, a further £50,000 by avoiding external marketing consultants (totaling £100,000), plus significant staff-time savings, faster identification of repair needs and improved asset/insurance management.
