A Ordnance Survey Case Study
The Scottish Government needed a nationally consistent spatial dataset of greenspaces across 32 local authorities to support policy, planning and asset management, but faced inconsistent classifications between councils and the high time and cost of collecting data nationally. Ordnance Survey (OS) supported the initiative by advising on product specifications and licensing and providing core data products (OS MasterMap Topography Layer and 1:10 000 Scale Raster) through the OSMA.
Working with Scottish Natural Heritage, greenspace scotland and the 32 local authorities, Ordnance Survey helped deliver the Scottish Greenspace Map—the world’s first publicly available greenspace map of its kind—creating a centralised, consistent dataset that saves time and money, enables national analysis and monitoring, and supports planners, researchers and the public. The map covers all 32 authorities and has reduced duplication and data-collection costs while improving consistency and decision-making across stakeholders.
