A Ordnance Survey Case Study
Forestry Commission Scotland needed a way to make detailed information about Scotland’s forests and rural areas available to landowners, agents, the public, and other stakeholders, while also helping identify land-use constraints and support planning applications. Working with partners, and using Ordnance Survey mapping data, it developed the Land Information Search (LIS) web-based mapping application to turn vast datasets into an accessible service.
Ordnance Survey supported the solution with mapping datasets such as OS VectorMap and raster layers, enabling LIS to deliver geographic searches and reports through Scotland’s Environment website. The result was clearer access to environmental information, faster identification of potential issues, reduced staff time spent on proposals, and time and money savings for applicants and the rural community; the project also created efficiency savings in application development and data delivery.
