A Ordnance Survey Case Study
Dundee City Council faced significant flood-risk management challenges — coordinating many organisations, supporting communities during floods, and accessing effective spatial data to implement flood policies. Ordnance Survey supported the council by providing the Scottish Detailed River Network (SDRN) through the OS MasterMap Networks Water Layer to give a consistent hydrological framework for planning and response.
Ordnance Survey’s SDRN/OS MasterMap Networks Water Layer, delivered under the One Scotland Mapping Agreement, provided a complete river centreline and integrated mapping that enabled more detailed flow analysis, joined‑up working and statutory compliance. The solution delivered detailed maintenance records and cost savings of about £10,000–£15,000 for Dundee (initial £9k plus ~£3k licensing and further staff‑time savings), with similar savings potential for other authorities.
