A Ordnance Survey Case Study
The Department for Transport (DfT) needed a modern, easy-to-use web-mapping tool to provide definitive access to its traffic statistics and downloadable raw datasets without relying on external contractors. To rebuild the Traffic Count site in-house, the DfT worked with Ordnance Survey technologies, notably the OS OpenSpace API and OS OpenData, to deliver an updated mapping and download service for traffic counts and Annual Average Daily Flow data.
The DfT Web team implemented a new traffic-counts site using Ordnance Survey’s OS OpenSpace and OS OpenData to embed interactive maps and provide year-by-year download access from 2000 onwards. The solution doubled unique visitors within two months, generated positive user feedback, eliminated ongoing contractor running costs and contributed to approximately £30,000 in annual savings, while making traffic data more accessible and easier to maintain.
